In Solidarity with the Refugees
World Refugee Day: In Solidarity with the Refugees
On June 20th, the world came together to celebrate the resilience and strength of refugees on World Refugee Day. This year, the focus was on understanding the challenges and triumphs of refugees, under the theme 'In Solidarity With Refugees.'
Charles Bafaki from the Office of the Prime Minister highlighted a crucial aspect of the refugee situation, stating, "There are people in many countries who are not citizens and they are not necessarily refugees unless they have sought asylum and been documented." His insights underscore the complexity of refugee identification and the importance of proper documentation.
Bafaki also pointed out the evolving nature of the refugee crisis, "Situations in Europe and Asia, such as Ukraine, are currently producing new refugees. What was once seen as an issue predominantly affecting African countries has now become a global issue. Refugees can emerge anywhere."
John Mary Kisembo, Project Director at Jesuit Refugee Service, addressed the alarming increase in refugee numbers. He emphasized, "If refugees are self-settled, they must compete with nationals in education and other areas. A significant percentage of them are non-English speakers, which presents a major challenge." This highlights the barriers to integration that refugees face, particularly in education and language.
Despite these challenges, Kisembo also shared a positive development, "With the support of the government, there have been successful language adoption programs that enable refugees to effectively communicate with the local community. This initiative fosters peaceful coexistence and helps meet their needs." These programs are vital for facilitating better integration and ensuring that refugees can contribute meaningfully to their new communities.
The discussions and insights shared on World Refugee Day serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity and support for refugees globally. As we move forward, it is crucial to continue fostering inclusive environments and providing the necessary support systems to help refugees rebuild their lives.
World Refugee Day is not just a day of recognition but a call to action for everyone to play a part in supporting and standing with refugees. Together, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their status, has the opportunity to thrive.
